The NewCities Institute, the Kentucky League of Cities and Morehead State University have been named “2008 Kentucky Innovator of the Year” for their collaborative research initiative in Morehead and Rowan County. The NewCity Morehead project was selected from over 100 other entries in the Southern region for its outstanding initiative in youth development and engagement. In 2006, the NewCities Institute began the NewCity Morehead initiative that assisted Morehead and Rowan County civic leaders to engage their citizens in conversations about goals for their community in the 21st century. The Innovator Award was presented at the Youth: The Real Future of the South conference, which focused on youth development and engagement and offered strategies for building policies and partnerships for young individuals to become responsible leaders. The projects were judged upon their uniqueness, ability to target young individuals and to provide a proven track record or reliable measure of future success.

NewCity Moscow

In 2005, the NewCities Institute created “America’s NewCities Initiative” to assist communities in engaging their citizens.  Based upon the 12 Principles of Community Building, the Initiative provides processes and strategies to help communities thrive in the 21st global economy.  Our communities are listed on the right.  You can follow our adventures as citizens describe their hopes and dreams for the future of their communities.

Over a period of twelve months, hundreds of citizens participated in the process that became a work in progress.  Through a series of listening sessions, charettes, and continuous dialogue, the NewCities Institute worked with the community to devise a series of strategies to address several recurring themes that emerged throughout the process.

in September 2006, the NewCities Institute presented its final recommendations to the community.  While the community has utilized several of the strategies outlined in the final report, the leaders are continuing to engage Moscow's citizens in meaningful dialogue about the community's future.

We salute the courage of the local leadership to continuously engage its citizens in meaningful dialogue.  We are proud to call Moscow, Idaho our first NewCity!

Congratulations Moscow!
