Kentucky Scholars

The Kentucky Scholars Initiative is a statewide effort that joins business and community representatives with middle and high school students in classroom conversations designed to help them understand what tomorrow’s workplace will be like, what employers are likely to expect of them and what skills they will need in order to compete effectively for the best jobs.

Based on research findings that demonstrate a strong link between the types of courses students take and their post graduation success, presenters encourage students to follow the Kentucky Scholars Course of Study. The Scholars Course of Study offers students a course roadmap that will prepare them well for their post graduation years, regardless of whether they go on to college or choose other options.

Students who take tougher courses throughout high school demonstrate higher SAT and ACT scores, better college completion rates and, they earn better pay whether or not they attend college, just a few among many reasons students are rewarded by becoming Kentucky Scholars. - MORE >>

One to One: Practicing Reading with Students

Reading is so fundamental to learning that the federal government several years ago launched a national campaign to raise reading achievement among the youngest learners, and to ensure that every child can read at grade level by his or her 9th birthday. The Partnership believes that business has both a stake and a role to play in helping children learn to read, and has therefore developed One to One: Practicing Reading with Students. It is also piloting a similar program to help struggling middle school students.

One to One is more than a reading program. It provides businesses with the support and resources it needs to start a volunteer program in a local elementary or middle school, train its employees to work one-on-one helping children with their reading, keep informed on the most recent reading test data, and use that data to make decisions in local communities. - MORE >>
