aking schools safer for students has become a nationwide priority in the wake of highly publicized school shootings in recent years. But there is a lot of conflicting information about how safe schools really are and what is necessary to make them secure without sacrificing the open, welcoming environment that is so important for student learning.
But the latest research on safe schools shows that there doesn't have to be a trade off. As it turns out, a welcoming environment is one of the most critical components of school safety.
This report is designed to help educators, parents, students and community members create the kind of school environment that enhances learning while ensuring safety. It is based on a review of recent research on the topic in Kentucky and nationally, interviews with researchers and educators and the Partnership for Kentucky Schools' experience with its Welcoming Schools program.
